Working together to limit the impact of flooding in Hastings
Heavy rain over the past few days has caused significant surface water flooding in the Hastings area

Ahead of Storm Ciarán, our team has been working around the clock with other agencies to protect customers and businesses from further flooding.
As part of these efforts, we have put new pumps in place on the seafront that can move an extra 1000 litres of water per second away from the town if needed. These are in addition to the multiple wastewater tankers we already have on standby.
Elsewhere, we have also sealed a manhole cover in South Terrace and are continuously monitoring the Pelham Pipe to ensure it remains clear. This will ensure surface water can make its way to the sea.
To reassure residents further, we have provided sandbags to properties and businesses in South Terrace, Station Road, Waldegrave Street and Priory Meadow shopping centre.
We will continue to work hard with other organisations to do everything in our power to ensure Hastings does not suffer flooding as a result of Storm Ciarán.
Update 12:45 Sunday 29 October
The extreme rainfall experienced over the past few days may have eased slightly this morning, but there’s still widespread flooding across the South East, and particularly in East Sussex and Hastings.
We’re still providing support to the Local Council and Fire Service to remove the remaining standing surface water from the town centre and have been working through the night to help reduce any further impact on local residents and businesses.
We’ll be assisting with the clean-up operation as customers return from the temporary accommodation they were provided with yesterday.

Update 18:45 Saturday 28th October
As a result of the heavy rainfall over the past few days, there’s now widespread flooding across East Sussex and Hastings. The extreme weather conditions have seen 60mm of rain fall in the past 24 hours.
We’re doing everything we can to help our customers and we’re arranging alternative accommodation for those worst affected by the surface water flooding in the town centre.
We’re liaising with the Fire Service and Local Council, working together to tackle this severe weather situation.
Following the recent heavy rain, there's been significant surface water flooding in the Hastings area.
Our Wastewater Pumping Site at Coombs has been flooded, which has resulted in a release via the local storm overflow. Over the weekend our teams will be on site checking for any debris and carrying out litter picks on the beach, if necessary. Our teams will also be taking water quality samples to assess any environmental impact.
The flooding of Hastings town centre is not related, and we believe it has been caused by a blocked surface water drain. We're working closely with Hastings Borough Council and the Environment Agency to investigate and limit the impact of the flooding and any impact to our customers.
